"What If...?" stands as an uneven but persistent exploration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through alternate realities, largely defined by its commitment to re-casting established roles. Across its run, the central pattern involves swapping foundational heroes, predominantly focusing on elevating female and minority characters into positions of power and heroism. Season 1 established this template by re-imagining core figures through gender and race-swapping. Season 2 continued this trend, making Captain Carter a recurring anchor and introducing new, instantly capable Indigenous heroines, often framing Western expansion as an antagonist force defeated by these new heroes. The final season solidified this direction, positioning Captain Carter as the moral center of the entire multiverse saga and culminating in a finale focused almost entirely on a team of diverse heroines.
Over the three seasons, the show reveals a clear evolution in focus. While early episodes leaned heavily into replacing existing white male heroes, later seasons shifted toward celebrating existing or newly created female and non-white characters as the primary agents of heroism and moral good. Despite this clear ideological prioritization—where identity politics often shapes the narrative setup—the overall execution remains within a safe, secular, action-adventure framework. The stories mostly avoid deep engagement with complex social issues beyond the casting choices, focusing instead on genre exercises like mecha battles, Westerns, and high-stakes adventure.
The series ultimately delivers a collection of disparate, sometimes disjointed, tales. Its primary thematic thread is the celebration of diverse heroism, positioning powerful women and non-white characters as morally superior or inherently capable heroes ready to lead the multiverse. While individual episodes sometimes return to classic MCU sentiment regarding friendship and self-sacrifice, the overarching message reinforces the elevation of these new archetypes. "What If...?" functions as a conceptual playground for the MCU, but one consistently guided by a mission to diversify and redefine the established canon through alternate identities.
